GFCI Outlets Explained: What They Are and Where You Need Them

If you’ve ever noticed an outlet with small “test” and “reset” buttons in your kitchen or bathroom, you’ve encountered a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter, or GFCI. These outlets are one of the most important safety devices in a modern home, and understanding how they work can help you use them correctly — and know when one has tripped.

How a GFCI Outlet Works

A GFCI continuously monitors the electrical current flowing through a circuit. If it detects even a small imbalance between the outgoing and incoming current — which can happen when electricity finds an unintended path, such as through water or a person’s body — it shuts off power in a fraction of a second. This rapid response is what makes GFCIs so effective at preventing electric shock.

Where Building Codes Require Them

The National Electrical Code requires GFCI protection in areas where water and electricity are likely to meet, including kitchens, bathrooms, garages, unfinished basements, outdoor outlets, and areas near sinks or wet bars. If you’re renovating any of these spaces, installing GFCI outlets isn’t just good practice — it’s typically required by code.

Testing Your GFCIs

Manufacturers recommend testing GFCI outlets monthly. Press the “test” button — you should hear a click and the outlet should cut power. Then press “reset” to restore it. If a GFCI won’t reset, or if it trips repeatedly, that’s a sign of a wiring issue or a failing device that should be checked out.

One GFCI Can Protect Multiple Outlets

A single GFCI outlet can be wired to protect other standard outlets downstream on the same circuit, which is why some homes have far fewer GFCI-style outlets than you might expect. If a regular-looking outlet stops working, check nearby outlets for a GFCI that may have tripped.

Installation Considerations

Installing a GFCI is similar to replacing a standard outlet, but the wiring has “line” and “load” terminals that must be connected correctly for downstream protection to work. If you’re unsure which wires are which, this is a good project to hand off to a licensed electrician.
