LED vs. Incandescent: Is It Time to Upgrade Your Home Lighting?

Lighting is one of the easiest and most cost-effective upgrades a homeowner can make, and the choice between LED and traditional incandescent bulbs has real financial and practical consequences over time.

Energy Efficiency

Incandescent bulbs produce light by heating a filament, which wastes a large portion of the energy they consume as heat rather than light. LED bulbs, by contrast, convert a much higher percentage of electricity directly into light, typically using around 75% less energy than an incandescent bulb to produce the same brightness.

Lifespan

A typical incandescent bulb lasts around 1,000 hours, while a comparable LED bulb can last 15,000 to 25,000 hours or more. In practice, that means an LED installed in a frequently used fixture might not need replacing for a decade or longer.

Upfront Cost vs. Long-Term Savings

LEDs cost more per bulb than incandescents, which can make the initial purchase feel less appealing. But when you factor in the dramatically lower energy use and far longer lifespan, LEDs typically pay for themselves within the first year or two of use, especially in fixtures that run for several hours a day.

Heat Output and Safety

Because incandescent bulbs release so much energy as heat, they can become hot enough to pose a burn or fire risk in enclosed fixtures or near flammable materials. LEDs run much cooler, which makes them a safer choice for enclosed fixtures, recessed lighting, and fixtures near fabric or paper.

Light Quality and Dimming

Early LED bulbs had a reputation for harsh, cold light, but modern LEDs are available in a wide range of color temperatures, from warm yellow tones similar to incandescent bulbs to cool white or daylight tones. If you use dimmer switches, make sure to buy LED bulbs labeled as dimmable, and consider pairing them with an LED-compatible dimmer for the smoothest performance.

Making the Switch

Replacing bulbs is as simple as swapping one for another in most fixtures. For a whole-home upgrade, start with the fixtures you use most — kitchens, living rooms, and outdoor lighting — where the energy savings will add up fastest.
